Developer Matt Thorson announced that Celeste has sold over 500,000 copies in 2018, thanking the players and mentioning that work is being done on, “some farewell Celeste levels,” that are, “very hard.”

This is the first major milestone announced in terms of sales, as it launched in January of this year. The platformer was renown for its hardcore challenge when it came to collecting the strawberries strewn about its chapters and levels, and that challenge will continue with these new batches of levels set to release in “early 2019” according to Thorson.

Celeste launched on January 25, 2018 for Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, Mac, and Linux and quickly became a favorite. It went on to win awards for Best Independent Game and Games for Impact at The Game Awards 2018. Based on a game jam and expanded into a full game, this platformer has a warm narrative at its center alongside its difficulty. Main developer Matt Thorson is known for his work on Towerfall, the best game for the ill-fated Ouya that got ported off that dead-on-arrival platform and onto pretty much every other console at the time. The original game jam prototype for Celeste is available in the game itself, accessed by finding a computer with Pico-8 in a room during Chapter 3.

Celeste will be free for Xbox Live Gold members on Xbox One next month, and is getting its own physical version thanks to Limited Run Games in January 2019 as well. The Nintendo Switch version was its most successful version at launch, beginning the long trend of indie developers porting their pre-existing games to Switch in an attempt to satisfy players who found Nintendo’s 2018 lineup lackluster and find success on the new console.
