While it was one of the most anticipated games to release last year, Cyberpunk 2077 had a noticeably rocky launch last month that came with waves of controversy. Because of the game’s shaky performance (especially on older PS4 and Xbox One hardware), the reaction to Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch prompted several apologies from developer CD Projekt Red, lawsuits, its removal from the PlayStation Store, and a complicated situation around requesting refunds. Since then, CD Projekt Red is seeming to make good on its promise of refunding players unhappy with the game’s performance, with some players even getting to keep the game itself afterward.

In a report from VICE Games‘ Patrick Klepek, several players of Cyberpunk 2077 detailed their experiences of requesting refunds for the game from CD Projekt Red. So far, several players have noted that CD Projekt Red has refunded them through PayPal, and surprisingly, many players have mentioned that the studio either hasn’t requested them to return their physical copies or revoked digital licenses on consoles or PC.

One player that spoke to VICE Games mentioned that they were able to keep the contents of Cyberpunk‘s $250 collector’s edition including the game itself, even after showing proof of purchase and receiving a full refund from CD Projekt Red. Another noted that so far the studio hasn’t revoked access to their digital Xbox copy of the game after requesting a refund and even sending the code for the game to the studio directly.

It’s worth noting that the studio could likely request players to either return physical copies or revoke the licenses for digital copies at a later date, and may just be working through an extensive backlog of refund requests. Initially the studio had set a deadline for players to submit requests for refunds until the end of December 2020, but according to VICE, the email address used to process refunds still appears to be accepting requests, with the studio reportedly getting back to players throughout the next month or so.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC, with optimizations for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S coming later this year.
