In another unexpected development following the closure of Telltale Games, a Reddit user leaked footage of the company’s now-canceled Stranger Things project. The leak shows off gameplay featuring TV show characters Will Byers, his mother Joyce Byers, and a Demogorgon in the Upside Down.
The leaked footage depicts will in an interactive conversation with Joyce, in usual Telltale form, and standard point-and-click exploration. Additional footage shows a horror-infused first-person encounter with a Demogorgon.
The footage is interesting in that the game appears to have been built from something other than the Telltale Tool engine; the company, before its closing, was said to have plans to move away from their old engine and switch to the Unity engine after The Walking Dead: The Final Season (via Eurogamer).
This leak appears to be authentic, with another anonymous Reddit user claiming to be a former Telltale developer responding to the leaks, not only apparently confirming the authenticity but also accosting the former Telltale employee who supposedly orchestrated this leak.
Despite the project’s cancellation and the closure of Telltale, Netflix is still looking at other options to produce a Stranger Things game. Meanwhile, while the second episode of The Walking Dead: The Final Season is likely the final piece of work from Telltale to receive an official release, the company announced in a press release that they are “working towards a solution” to complete and release the remaining two episodes. The statement did not clarify whether or not previous Telltale employees would be involved, or if they will be compensated in any way.
