While Riot Games made fans wait a bit longer than expected, the official theme song of the League of Legends 2019 World Championship has finally arrived this afternoon.
Riot released the Worlds theme following the conclusion of the Play-In Stage of the tournament which saw Clutch Gaming, Splyce, Damwon Gaming, and Hong Kong Attitude advance to the Group Stage, which kicks off this weekend. The song is entitled Phoenix and the video which accompanies the track features some truly remarkable animation work.
Phoenix is performed by Cailin Russo and Chrissy Costanza and the video for the track features a variety of pro players from some of the most popular teams in the world. G2 Esports’ Caps, SK Telecom T1’s Faker, and reigning world champion Rookie from Invictus Gaming are all seen in the video alongside animations that have each player merging with various champions from League of Legends. Caps takes on the persona of Irelia, Faker is shown as Karma, and Rookie is Lissandra. The music video concludes with the players walking towards a stadium, where Worlds 2019 will seemingly be taking place.
Riot has been widely known for producing some extremely stellar musical tracks over the years, but I have to say that I’m a bit let down by Phoenix. The song isn’t bad by any means, but it doesn’t have the same level of excitement that previous songs like Rise from 2018 or Legends Never Die from 2017 brought with them. That said, the video is truly pretty great and is worth watching purely for the hand drawn-looking animations on display.
You can check out the music video for Phoenix down below if you’d like. The League of Legends 2019 World Championship is set to pick up again later this week on Saturday, October 12, at 8:00am EST/5:00am PST as Fnatic and SKT kick off the day’s matches.
