As 2019 starts to draw to a close, so will the ranked season of League of Legends. Per usual at the end of every season, Riot will then begin implementing the preseason changes that will then officially take effect next year. While we still don’t know what those changes will look like yet, today, Riot tipped its hand just a bit about what to expect.
In a new blog post on the official League of Legends website, the development team stated that one of its biggest goals for 2020 is to add more variety to Summoner’s Rift, the map in which all standard games take place. “This preseason, we want to add new layers of depth to the map itself to evolve it into more than a static backdrop in your games,” said the post in question. Even though specifics weren’t outlined as to what this could mean, Riot did expand and say that it wants to “create more memorable moments via different environments you don’t see every game.” One such example of this currently is with dragons.
The post continued on saying that Riot also wants to make the map further tailored to players trying to master it. “Much of [Summoner’s Rift’s] mastery is currently macro-oriented (eg. rotations, objective trading), and we want terrain to support more opportunity for in-combat playmaking.”
While it’s still early to know just what these changes could look like, on paper, they sound like some of the more extreme updates that the MOBA has seen in quite some time. By comparison, the biggest changes that LoL saw in 2019 dealt with lanes and introduced Tower Plates. Even though this proved to be a fairly big shift in the game’s meta, further changes to Summoner’s Rift as a whole sound like they could shake things up even further.
Riot will have more to say on the future of League of Legends next week during its 10-year anniversary stream on October 15. In the meantime, the League of Legends World Championship 2019 Group Stage begins tomorrow morning.
