Modders cannot and should not be limited by their imagination. While some are out there perfecting horror games by adding Thomas the Tank Engine, others are filling out crossover fantasies. In a brand new mod to Nintendo Switch fighting game Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, players can defend their swamp as Shrek. Seriously.

The unbelievable video went live yesterday, showing a mod from creator Hefty in action:

Swapping out the similarly-statured Ganondorf, this mod to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a full-on animated Shrek — not some slap-dashed JPG. And honestly, it looks great. Sure, it seems pretty basic given that there is no voice-over swap and all of the moves are exactly the same as Ganondorf. But perhaps we see a more fleshed-out Shrek update in the future that can give a more holistic reimagining of the internet’s favorite ogre.

Even still, this isn’t an entirely original idea. Many may remember that the Super Smash Bros. for Wii U modding community had already done a more full-featured Shrek in the past:

Albeit, there are definitely far more tools to facilitate that on the Wii U version of the game than the recently launched Nintendo Switch sequel.

Shrek has maintained a legendary meme status across both the gaming space and the internet at large — in fact, in our eulogy to the fighters that didn’t make the final roster, we included him (however unenthusiastically). But there are countless Shrek modding crossovers, including my personal favorite — Slender x Shrek.

However, there is a also a vocal fanbase who is hoping to see a playable Shaggy in any fighting game. Throughout the month of January, there was a running petition to have him included in Mortal Kombat 11. And though that never materialized, modders of Jump Force have managed to add Shaggy into the game.

On the other end, Super Smash Bros. fans will be buoyed by fan projects like this. Last week it was disheartening to learn that Super Smash Bros. Melee would be left off the EVO roster along with other titles.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available exclusively on Nintendo Switch; if you haven’t picked up the game you can do so via Amazon — even if it doesn’t come with Shrek packed in.
