The Switch certainly can’t compete with the Xbox One or PS4 in terms of pure power. It is even farther behind the updated Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. But where Nintendo lacks in power, they normally make up for it with their creative artistic abilities. Now, Breath of the Wild wasn’t the most graphically inducing game on the market, however, the use of cel-shading created a, no pun intended, breathtaking experience. However, if you ever wondered what the game would look like without the cel-shaded art style, you are in luck today.
Arkh Longstride was able to use the latest build of the CEMU emulator to forgo the cel-shading. On top of that, they were able to tweak some other aspects of the game such as getting rid of fog, increasing the draw distance, cranking up the frame rate up to 60 frames-per-second, and adding some filters to increase the clarity.
I was a bit surprised how good the game looked after all of the changes were made. Now, of course, watching the video in 4K resolution doesn’t hurt. However, I think even without the cel-shading, the game looks really good. You are sort of missing that Nintendo charm that we all love, which I am a huge proponent for. Going for the gritty and mature look doesn’t always correlate to a better-looking game. Wind Waker will stand the test of time because of its design and I think Breath of the Wild will as well.
